Overview
|
 |
|
Youth Allowance may be paid to a young person who is studying, undertaking training or an Australian Apprenticeship, looking for work or sick.
Personal income and assets tests and waiting periods may apply (including liquid assets waiting periods).
Parental income and assets tests may also apply if the youth is not independent.
Age of Independence
The age of independence is the age at which a young person receiving Youth Allowance becomes subject to a personal income test only and is no longer subject to both the parental income test and the personal income test.
The Youth Allowance age of independence for full-time students is:
2009 – 25 years old
2010 – 24 years old
2011 – 23 years old
From 2012 – 22 years old

Eligibility
|
|
|
You may be eligible for Youth Allowance if you are:
- 16 to 21 years old and looking for full-time or undertaking approved activities
- 18 to 24 years old and studying full-time
- 16 to 17 years old and have completed year 12 or equivalent
- 16 to 17 years in full-time secondary study, who needs to live away from home in order to study, or are considered independent for Youth Allowance
- 16 to 24 years old and undertaking a full-time Australian Apprenticeship
